There are a few premier lakes within about ten to fifteen miles to the north and northwest of Grand Rapids that are highly sought after because of their quality, size and uniqueness. The Wabana Chain of Lakes is made up of four pristine lakes on the southern edge of the Chippewa National Forest that give it a wilderness ambiance mixed in with extremely wooded residential parcels of land. You will find both year-round homes and rustic cabins on Wabana Lake and Bluewater Lake…but on Little Trout Lake and Trout Lake, at the northern edge of the chain, private properties are extremely limited. However, there is plenty of public land here for nearly all recreational uses.
Deer Lake and Moose Lake are two other popular lakes just west of Wabana and closer to the community of Deer River. Deer Lake is one of the highest valued lakes in Itasca County, with its appealing dense woods, wide ranging elevations, and turquoise waters. Moose Lake is just to its north, and is an excellent fishery.
Spider Lake, Johnson Lake, and Amen Lake are a few other popular lakes in the area with a unique mixture of waterfront real estate and untouched public lands, where you can sometimes feel like you are living at the edge of the Boundary Waters. For those in search of solitude only a few hours from the Twin Cities, there isn’t a better place to find it!
