There is only a few mile of separation between Grand Rapids and Coleraine, but it could be said that they are two very different worlds. Each with very distinct, recognizable identities in their surroundings, schools and business make-ups, Grand Rapids has tended to expand into a Northern Minnesota hub city, where Coleraine maintains its quieter, tightly-knit, and very proud independence. But with four incredible 18-hole golf courses between the two communities, and miles and miles of public lands for those who love the outdoors, they combine their assets to offer great recreational opportunities on and off the water.

The Range really begins in Coleraine, and you will begin to see iron ore deposits that have grown into man-made mountains all along Highway 169 to the east. The historic mining communities of Taconite, Marble, Calumet, Pengilly, Nashwauk and Keewatin, are still within the borders of Itasca County on the way to Hibbing, and provide excellent opportunities for lake homes where spouses work in two different communities along this corridor extending to Virginia and beyond.

Trout Lake is a very deep and clear lake that rests along the southern border of Coleraine and is a popular lake home destination for many who work from Grand Rapids to Hibbing. Pengilly is a smaller hamlet with its own nine-hole golf course and excellent walleye-infested water body in the way of Swan Lake to situate itself on. You will find both lake homes and cabins all around its shores. There are also many smaller lakes throughout this Eastern Itasca County Area, and several nice ones like Sucker Lake, Buck Lake, Lawrence Lake, and Stingy Lake a little to the north of these communities.
