Lake Vermilion probably doesn’t need a big introduction, since it is one of the most well-known lakes in Minnesota, and the fourth largest in the state. Even if you haven’t been there, it just conjures up the feeling of being “up north.” And with Fortune Bay Casino and its world class golf course tied to the water, it has a versatile make-up of attractions, from cabin owners to gamblers to golfers to fisherman and snowmobilers.

Vermilion lake properties have been very popular because of the size and beauty of the lake, and because of the plethora of recreation that surrounds it. And lakefront real estate here also has a wide range of characteristics, from small cabins to log mansions tucked into the many nooks and crannies along the craggy shoreline…and even large acreage parcels on the islands and on the northern shores of the mainland with water-access only – adjoining the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

The town of Tower, on the south end of the lake, is located about a half hour north of Virginia, and about the same distance southwest of Ely. For years there has been a movement to create a harbor into the downtown directly from Lake Vermilion, and it looks like that is beginning to take place with the Tower Historic Harbor Project. This will no doubt bring more housing and business opportunities to the area that are based on the lake.

The north end of the lake is considered the “Cook End,” although Cook is actually about ten miles to the west of the shoreline, and most of the area on the north side tends to be a bit more rural feeling, with somewhat larger lake lots being a little more common here. Over on the east shore is the new Lake Vermilion State Park, which promises to bring an even wider variety of options to those who love the lake.
