With waterfront real estate prices on the “Big Brainerd Lakes” costing about as much as most anywhere in the state, those who live full time and work in Brainerd may opt for others types of waterfront homes on the smaller lakes around Baxter such as White Sand, Red Sand, Perch and the Gull River – or waterfront properties along the Mississippi River and the lakes along it to the southwest or northeast of the city, such as Rice Lake, Gilbert Lake just outside of town, and Little Rabbit Lake near Riverton.
About ten miles to the southeast of town is another option – both for full-time Brainerd residents and cabin owners – where South Long Lake and Upper South Long Lake are located. And about the same distance to the southwest of town along Highway 371 is Crow Wing Lake. These lakes, along with several others along the west shore of Mille Lacs Lake near Garrison, provide a closer alternative to lakefront cabin owners who want to stay nearer to the metro area and not compete with the hordes of people a little further to the north.
