The Iron Range is a unique land formation from its western boundary around the community of Coleraine, to the eastern end of this historic mining expanse near Babbit, traveling mainly along Highway 169 through what are commonly referred to as the Range Cities. Hibbing, Chisholm, Virginia, Eveleth, Gilbert, Biwabik and Aurora are some of the names that come to mind when you think of The Range. But there are many smaller ones sprinkled in, with rich histories from the glory days of mining, which have been home to the same families for generations.

The lakes of the Iron Range are a mixture of natural water bodies – generally quite small in size – and others that have been created over the past century or more from the mining operations. Many of these now house crystal clear waters several hundred feet deep. The Mesabi Bike Trail winds up and down through the forests, and past many of these small reservoirs, on its connection of over 20 communities from one end of The Range to the other.

The largest lake on the west end of this sub-region is Swan Lake, just over the border into Itasca County, about fifteen miles southwest of Hibbing. You will find additional lakefront properties here in the Itasca Region. Hibbing also has a cluster of smaller recreational lakes to the south of it, such as Janet, Helen and Island where you will find a variety of year-round lake homes.

As you travel east, and keeping within the ten or fifteen mile range of these Range Communities, Ely Lake and Pleasant Lake are a couple of options to the south of Eveleth; Sand Lake and Lake Fourteen are popular lake home and cabin spots within fifteen miles north of Virginia; and Lake Esquagama, Embarrass Lake, Colby and Whitewater Lake are the larger basins to the west, near Biwabik and Hoyt Lakes – although shoreline around Colby and Whitewater is mainly owned by Minnesota Power. There are many other small lakes – with plenty of real estate options – to the north and south of this east/west dividing along.
