Red Lake probably doesn’t need much of a description if you have ever been there. It is a massive body of water (actually two bodies with Upper and Lower Red Lake combined), and an unbelievable fishery all year long. At only fifteen feet in maximum depth, Upper Red Lake is like a huge, 120,000 acre bowl of sand…apparently perfect for spawning.
Nearly 80% of the water on the two lakes is within the Red Lake Indian Reservation, so lakefront real estate is only available on the eastern end of Upper Red Lake near the small town of Waskish. Kelliher, to the south about fifteen miles, serves as a supply base for most cabin owners on the lake, and offers a few bars and restaurants for those who need to get away for a change of atmosphere.
Real estate on Upper Red Lake is quite affordable and generally modest in appearance, so those who love the best fishing available – away from much of civilization – can be in heaven here.
